For centuries farmers have harvested fruits and vegetables during certain lunar signs to stimulate ultimate productivity. The Farmers’ Almanac still carries “best days to” tables based on formulas that take the Moon’s place in the Zodiac into consideration. If lunar cycles control something as powerful as our tides, why not our hair growth?

In the Farmers’ Almanac we list an entire year’s worth of best days to retard hair growth and then best days to enhance hair growth. Retarding hair growth can apply to shaving, waxing, and plucking.

For September and October:
Best Days to Cut Hair to Enhance Growth:
September: 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 24, 25
October: 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 21–23

Best Days to Cut Hair to Retard Growth:

September: 3, 4, 8, 9, 26, 27, 30
October: 1, 5, 6, 10, 25, 28, 29

So as you consider living healthy, don't forget your hair! Before you head out or make your next hair appointment, check the Farmers’ Almanac for the best days to do this. Then let us know how well this old but new method worked.

According to the Moon, when should you cut your hair to make it grow faster?
During the waxing phase -- that is, when the Moon is between new and full.

Hot Oil Hair Treatment and Bath Recipe
By Farmers' Almanac Staff • August 11, 2008

When exposed to harsh winter winds or extra dry indoor conditions over a period of time it may have a drying effect on your scalp and skin. This once-a-month hot oil hair treatment and oil bath will make your skin feel soft and smooth from head to toe. Give yourself the spa treatment, conveniently in the comfort of your own home. Schedule this thirty minutes before bathing time.

Put a towel in the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes or until nice and warm to the touch.
You’ll need a shower cap for the following.
Hot Oil Hair Treatment
½ c. olive oil (May reduce to ¼ c. for short hair.)
¼ t. peppermint oil
¼ t. vegetable glycerin

Heat combined ingredients briefly in a pot on the stove or in a bowl in the microwave until warm, but not hot. Standing with your head and hair hanging over the sink or tub pour the warm oil onto your hair and gently massage into scalp and all of hair.. Put hair on top of head and into a shower cap. Top with the dry, hot towel. Leave on head for 30 minutes while you relax. Draw a warm bath and wash hair while in the tub. The oil treatment from your hair will moisturize your dry skin while you bathe.
Such an easy and enjoyable way to pamper yourself. Be careful when stepping out of the tub, it maybe slippery. The oil will need to be cleaned from the tub afterwards too, to avoid slipping.
